Rugby Controversy in Sydney
by James Gumbert

With the opening of the 2000 Paralympics just a day old, controversy has erupted in the rugby world. The story centers on Canada and an apparent invasion of a closed match between themselves and Sweden.

As the story goes, the Canada team apparently found an Australia video camera running behind a chalkboard at the Ann Clarke field house. The camera was confiscated and turned into the proper authorities where it is still waiting to be claimed. At this moment fingers are being pointed everywhere beginning first with the Aussies. Rumors have it that the Aussies were hoping to get a view of both Canada, and first day opponent Sweden by setting up an unmanned camera and letting it run during practice.

When asked for comment Canadian officials were obviously displeased with the idea that their closed session practices were being secretly watched. A violation of the spirit of the games is a moral obligation we all have to uphold commented one rattled rugger.

With no real penalty in place for such a violation, the teams are left to themselves to police their own actions. And while no team or individual has come forward to claim the camera, one can only wonder who or whom might benefit from such a tape. Surely, all teams who face one another would profit from knowing the defenses and plays of their opposition.

At press time neither Australia nor Sweden could be reached for comment.

Story developing Hot!!!!!
