2002 USQRA National Championships Set

The United States Quad Rugby Association (USQRA) is excited to announce that the Denver Harlequins will host the Division I and Division II USQRA National Championships and Annual General Meeting in 2002. This prestigious tournament will take place in Denver, Colorado on April 11-14, 2002, and will bring sixteen of the countries top wheelchair rugby teams together for what promises to be a weekend full of intense competition.

Ed Suhr, President of the USQRA recently stated that the association is pleased to be returning to Denver for Nationals. “The Harlequins hosted this event in 1995, and it was very well received by our membership”. “Their ability to put on a first class tournament has been demonstrated many times over the years, and we have every confidence that they will do an exceptional job in 2002”.

One of the interesting things that the tournament directors have planned for the tournament is a live Webcast of the games. This will be a first for a tournament here in the US, and will open up the event to a worldwide audience. Details on the broadcast will be released closer to the event.

Wheelchair rugby is the fastest growing wheelchair sport in the world today. It is a hard-hitting fast paced game that is played by disabled athletes who are quadriplegic. There are more than thirty-five teams here in the United States, and numerous others throughout the world that participate in the sport. The success and popularity of the game has made it a Paralympic sport, which is quite remarkable considering the games brief 20-year history. The USA recently won the Gold medal in front of more than 10,000 fans during the 2000 Paralympics, which were held in Sydney, Australia.
