Annual Bash at the Bay a Big Success
by Bill Bouffard

The Maine - Casco Bay Navigators hosted their annual Bash at the Bay Wheelchair Rugby tournament on October 20th & 21st in Freeport, Maine. This was the 2nd year for The Bash, and it turned out to be a very exciting tournament. With the caliber of play increasing in the Northeast over the past few years, the competition was intense. Attending The 2001 Bash were the Connecticut Jammers, Boston Pitbulls, Magee Rolling Rebels and the Casco Bay Navigators.

As the scores will show, the weekend proved to be a see-saw event for all the teams except Boston, who dominated the court. Class 1.5 Rob Boothby was his ever charismatic self, and as always, a force on the court. We saw some old faces back on the bench for the Pitbulls as Gary Bogue (3.0) and Ken McDonald (2.0) are back in the action. Boston is aiming for a solid Division I position this season and is on their way to getting there.

Connecticut started the tournament strong with wins over Philly and Maine, but as the weekend went on the Jammers could not hold their lead and fell prey to both the Navigators and Rebels on Sunday. Rich Famiglietti (2.0) is back with the Jammers, which will strengthen their line-up this season. Missing from their bench was Paul Nitz and Jimmy Quick.

Philly played a strong game. The addition of Luan Degenaar, a big 2.5 from South Africa, will make the Rebels a tough team to beat in the Region this year. Despite the absence of Jim Thompson & John Stollings, the Rebels were impressive. Look for a new burst of life from the Rebels this season. The Beast should be interesting!

Maine was back with pretty much the same team as last year. The Navigators got off to a slow start, but as the weekend progressed their level of played picked up. Steve Dunn is as fast as ever and the newest addition to the team, Brad Williams, a strong 2.0, is going to be a force to reckon with. Having only played a couple games last season, Brad is picking up the game fast and will be chasing down the mid-pointers with a vengeance. Tighten your seatbelts and hang on for the ride! Maine will be a team to watch this season. Watch for the Navigators to make a shot for DII!

The Bash at the Bay is shaping up to be a great tournament to start the season. The Venue was excellent and easy to get to, and the town of Freeport is a great place to spend a sunny fall weekend. We are hoping to expand the tournament next season and attract teams from across the US and Canada. Keep an eye out for next year's tournament and get your team on the schedule!
