UNITED STATES QUAD RUGBY ASSOCIATION
|
February, 2005
On another bright and beautiful Saturday morning, people new and old to the sport of Quad Rugby arrived at Arizona State University’s Student Recreation Complex. Some were there to classify the athletes, some had come to learn how to classify for the United States Quad Rugby Association, a few more had come to volunteer their time and help out, and most came to get the all important classification card. This was an important step to the continued development to the Sun Devil Quad Rugby Program that is comprised of brand spanking new athletes that live throughout the valley. This clinic was the brainchild of Jason Curran who was instrumental in bringing together Anne Hart and her contingent of future physical therapists from Northern Arizona University, Mike Cottingham and his group of newbie ruger’s in the University of Arizona program, and our local bunch of talent that play at ASU. The Arizona Paralyzed Veterans of America showed their support as they provided breakfast for everyone, which was very much appreciated by the NAU and U of A group who both had long drives to arrive for the 9:00 a.m. start. Some players were easy to figure out, while others took a great deal more time to get a determination from Anne who is an international classifier for the USQRA. Since the classification is also determined by an athletes function on the court as well as their muscle test, the players were run through some drills and scrimmages. Steve (Buzz) Luzby who has many years of experience as an athlete and coach and Mike Cottingham ran the practice and gave out some pearls of wisdom on their philosophies of the game. Jody Luzby officiated to the dismay of the competitors that wanted to go out there and knock each other around a little. The clinic was a complete success thanks to the above mentioned individuals. Other thank you’s go out to the Gary Hershey and PRN Medical for providing water to the athletes, AZPVA Sport’s Director John Tuzzolino who was on hand to help support the ASU program. Do you want to come out and give rugby a try? Do you know someone that might be interested? For more information on this program please call or email me. Dan Ferreira
