RICK DRANEY From the Quickie Cronicles After suffering a broken neck and spinal cord injury at the age of 19 in a 1981 car accident, Rick Draney was left with what doctors call an "incomplete quadriplegic." Since Draney could no longer ride a motorcycle, the young Oceanside, California resident picked up a tennis racquet and has since dominated wheelchair tennis. The San Diego Hall of Champions recently named my the 34-year-old Draney "The Disabled Athlete of the Year" and honored him at the 50th Salute of the Champions dinner on February 14 at the Town & Country Convention Center. In 1995 Draney won his sixth singles title in the doubles title at the US Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships. He owns an undefeated singles record in eight tournaments, won the USA Tennis Association Indoor and Outdoor national titles and won a gold medal at the US Olympic Festival. Draney is also a member of the 1996 National Champion Sharp Shadow quad rugby team. |
