Quake Shakes Up Northwest Regionals
by Allen Seals
The games that were played Friday night showed no hint of
what would happen on Saturday. The host "California
Quake" formerly known as "The Sting" would
open things up playing against the 2nd year team
"Dukes of Saint Lukes." The quake broke loose
early and never looked back winning 39-26. On the other
court, Zilla downed Reno 26-21. In the third game, The
Oregon Trail beat in-state rival Portland
27-12. In the other three games on Friday everything went
as expected. The Quake beat Reno 33-19, Quadzilla beat
Spokane 35-22 and Washington beat Portland 39-22.
Saturdays first game would be the only
game that would be decided early that day as Spokane beat
Reno 41-21. In the second game #1 seeded Oregon Trail
took an early lead of 2 points over Washington but
couldn't hold the lead in the end. The first upset of the
Tourney would go to the Warriors. With one second on the
clock Oregon had two players posted to tie the game and
take it into overtime but the inbound pass was batted
away and Washington took the much deserved upset win
24-23. On the court 2, Zilla came up short against The
Quake 31-28. These two games setup the semi-finals Oregon
VS Cal. Quake and Washington VS Zilla.
In the Washington/Zilla semi-final they
traded goals the whole game. With two minutes to go
Washington sensing a chance to make it to their first
finals in the Northwest uped the intensity and took the
victory 36-32. On the other court, Oregon
took an early lead and uped it to 4 points by the half.
But, the Quake battled back subbing liberaly against the
4 man squad of the Trail. The Quake showed that they were
not afraid of the defending northwest champs or the
earlier lead that Oregon had mounted. The
Quake took their first lead of the game with just over a
minute to go in the game and finished off the Trail
29-27.
In the 5th/6th place game on Sunday the
Dukes beat Portland 35-30. The 3rd/4th place game pitted
The Oregon Trail against Zilla. The tip went up and the
battle began. Although Oregon won 38-31 the game was much
closer than the score showed. In the final game The
California Quake put on the press and took an early lead
and never looked back. The Quake became the 3rd different
team to win the Northwest in the last 3 years downing the
much improved Washington team 50-39.
Final standings were:
1st California Quake
2nd Washington Warriors
3rd Oregon Trail
4th Quadzilla
5th Dukes of Saint Lukes
6th Portland
7th Reno Crush
