Reno Synopsis

 by Allen Seals - 11/17/96
(a more detailed story to follow shortly)

The seeds went as expected in round robin play. The Ballard Blades (team was made up from all shadow users) smoked everybody in site and The Oregon Trail won their pool. Although Oregon won their pool, the games were much tighter. Their toughest match was of coarse "Zilla." With the addition of all-tourney selection Joby Falk, Zilla made it very hard for the Oregon Trail to defend their Quickie Reno Rugby Title. The game was one of the closest in the tourney. Oregon struck first but Zilla stayed with them. With 2:30 to play in the 4th Oregon only had a 2 point lead. Zilla raised their intensity and was called for several fouls at this point. Oregon worked the clock and finished 4 points ahead of Zilla.

In the other pool, the hardest hitting game of the tourney was the San Jose vs Seattle game. With players slamming each other, it was only a matter of time before someone would donate some blood. Finnaly, Marty Wittman was the donar. Going for a loose ball he was slamed by several of the San Jose players. He hit the floor and several chairs on his way down. The game was stopped while they bandaged Martys Head. Players were wiping up the floor left and right during this game. Although San Jose played a very good match Seattle won finishing 3 points ahead on the score board.

On the final day Utah beat Reno in the 7th/8th place game. San Jose (5th place) beat a much improved Spokane (6th place)team. And Zilla (3rd place) slid by a much improved Seattle (4th place) team. In the final game Oregon kept the score close in the 1st quarter (Ballard 9, Oregon 7). After the first quarter Oregon decided to give Ballard a chance so they subbed and played the rest of the game with 7 1/2 points. Ballard responded by also playing with 7 1/2 points. The big game experience of the Ballard players was too much for Oregon. Ballard won by about a thousand.
