Tennessee a Winter Wonderland
by Mitch Cumstein

To say that the 6th annual Mid Tennessee tournament was without excitement was to say the least an understatement. Snow, fire, blackouts, and whiteouts mixed in with a lot of hard hitting and fast paced rugby highlighted a weekend of play.

Few upsets were recorded in the twelve team tournament. The exception to this was the Lakeshore vs. Photo courtesy of PVA / S n' SSuncoast game. The game began under the darkened lights of the East gym. The fuse box had caught on fire and knocked out the lights to the court. After the smoke cleared it was decided that the games could continue. The game heated up quickly and melted the snow from the top of the gym. The teams traded goals the entire game. Neither team being able to pull more than 2 goals ahead. With 30 seconds left, Suncoast with the game tied took a one point lead. Lakeshore inbounded and tried to drive the length of the court, but the Suncoast defense proved to be to much. Suncoast wins by one.

The other games of note were the 3rd and 4th place game and of course the championship game. The 3rd and 4th place game featured the renewed battle between the Tennessee QuadCrushers and the Gulf Coast Hurricanes. The now famous battles between these two hard hitting teams delighted the hometown crowd. Each team trading goals, back and forth it went. First it was Bynum for the Canes then it was Chunn for the Crushers. Up and down the court the game went, the constant press of both teams allowed for quick scores, and turnovers. As the 1st half ended the Crushers took a 3 point lead into the break.

The second half started with the Canes bringing the game back to a tie. The Crushers being the champs they are showed the talent they have by taking the game under control and posting a 4 point lead that proved to be to much for the Hurricanes. The final score 35-31 Tennessee.

The crowd ready for more, geared up for the Championship match. Sharp and Tampa. The rematch of last month’s 18 point Shadow win over Tampa, started with both teams pressing in search of a turnover. But, both well-coached teams traded goals without error till the first turnover the game. On a breakaway goal Jerry Tinker was hit at the goal causing the ball to fly out of his lap as he was flying towards the floor. The result was a Tampa turnover that allowed Sharp to take the lead by one. The scores were fast and furious with finger tip catches and spectacular passes. These teams both proving why they belonged in the big game were hitting hard as the half time buzzer sounded. Shadow took a 1 point lead into the locker room.

The second half started the same way the first ended. Both teams going back and forth scoring and looking for the mistake. Soares and the machine Goldie leading the charge for Tampa. While Shadow featured Wyatt and Draney to lead there rotating offense that showed no signs of wear from the long weekend. The game could have gone either way but Team Shadow held onto a 2 point lead and won the game in what is sure to be a rematch somewhere down the line.

Hat’s off to the Tournament organizers for their great work under adverse circumstances. For the past two years they have dealt with unexpected snow storms and fires, broken lifts, well you get the idea. But, they always put on a good show. We’ll see you next year!
