November 1995
USA's Quad Rugby Team
on top of the World
By Dan McCauley
The USA all-star quad rugby team traveled
to Notwill, Switzerland, to participate in the 1995 World
Championships, October 24-28. Team Quickie was well
represented with Dan McCauley, Troy McGuirk and Mike
Wyatt from Southern California's Sharp Shadow team and
Angelo Mongiovi from EPVA of New York. The new Shadow
Heat rugby chair was a solid hit at the World
Championships.
Prior to the Worlds, the USA Team stopped in Leeds,
England, for a test match with the Great
Britain national team. The game was good warm-up for the
USA team as several lineups were tested and the win
helped team unity.
Team USA maintained their number one seeding as they
cruised through the round-robin play unscathed, beating
New Zealand, Switzerland, Sweden, Holland, Australia,
Great Britain and Canada. The top four teams from the
round robin play then squared off for the championship.
Team USA beat fourth seeded Great Britain while second
seeded Canada held off a determined third seeded New
Zealand team.
The championship game was played in front of a full
house. Canada and USA both came out fired up and ready to
play. The first half was a closely played game, but
Canada could not keep up with the depth of talent on the
USA team. USA earned the gold wit h a final score of 41
to 36.
Be sure to watch for the USA Rugby team as they go for
gold again at the Paralympics
in Atlanta this summer.
