South Central Sectionals - Demolition Survives South Central

Birmingham, AL - The Lakeshore Foundation hosted the 1998 USQRA South Central Sectionals, March 6-8, 1998. Eight teams squared off with hopes of qualifying for Nationals in Salt Lake City, Utah. The teams photo by Quad Rugby Todaywere as diverse as the section's geography. Teams from Arizona, Texas, Utah, Colorado, and Alabama were prepared for the battle at hand.

In the first game, the #4 seed Arizona Slam squared off with the #5 seed San Antonio Scorchers. This was the battle of the middle seeds to see who could potentially advance to the semi-finals. San Antonio, with their deliberate attack, took control of the Slam taking a 13-9 lead after the first. The attack was steady in the second by the Scorchers, but San Antonio still did not substitute and their lead increased to 23-16. The Texas team started a fresh line up going into the third. That team built a ten-goal advantage to keep the momentum up for the Scorchers. San Antonio held on to win by seven to potentially advance to the semi-final crossover. Mike Gilliland led Slam with 23 of their 30 goals.

In the rest of the first day's action, Colorado Highlanders defeated the Utah Extreme 41-26. Lakeshore easily handled the Arizona Wildchairs 50-13. TIRR beat the Dust Devils 45-26. Lakeshore hammered Utah in a 46-21 game. Sanphoto by Quad Rugby Today Antonio lost to TIRR 32-43, Colorado cruised to a 41-23 victory over the Wildchairs, and Arizona Slammed the Dust Devils, 37-30.

Saturday's action saw no real upsets. The Lakeshore Demolition and the TIRR Hurricanes cruised through pool play to advance to the semi-final crossovers. Lakeshore avenged an early season loss to foe Colorado, by defeating the Highlanders 39-28 in pool play. The Demolition then defeated the San Antonio Scorchers 39-21 to advance to the final with the top two seeds advancing to the championship game. Third seed Colorado and the surprise of the tournament, the fifth seed San Antonio Scorchers, would play the all-important 3rd/4th-place game. The 5th/6th place game would be played by the Arizona Slam and the Utah Extreme. The first game of the morning would be the battle for 7th between the Arizona Wildchairs and the Dust Devils.

The final day of action began behind schedule with the Wildchairs/Dust Devils game. Because of transportation problems, this game started late, and halftime was limited, but the Dust Devils cruised to an easy win and the seventh place finish, 42-21. The Arizona Slam claimed fifth place with a convincing 45-34 victory over the Utah Extreme. The fight for the last national tournament berth would not be an easy one, as the San Antonio Scorchers and the Colorado Highlanders squared off. Both teams were ready for battle, and the lead changed hands several times throughout the game. The first three-quarters each ended with the score tied. In the championship game, Lakeshore jumped out to 4-0 lead. Coach Alan Bailey corralled his troops and Brad Updegrove scored three unanswered goals. The first quarter ended deadlocked at 5-5. TIRR owned the possession to start the second, and quickly scored. TIRR controlled the second quarter leading at halftime 17-15. TIRR controlled the third going up by as many as five goals. The fourth quarter would be a war, TIRR started with possession at mounted a 31-27 lead to start the quarter. The Lakeshore Demolition answered with four straight goals. The next three minutes seesawed, but TIRR always answered the Demolition's goal production. Coach Kevin Orr used the Demolition's final timeout to send a message to his team. Lakeshore would not look back scoring three straight goals, leading 38-36 in the seventh minute of the fourth. The Demolition stepped up with defense, and controlled the last minute fury of the Hurricanes. The Lakeshore Demolition survived the Hurricanes to win the South Central Sectionals and advance to Salt Lake City for the National Championships.
