8th Annual QUICKIE Reno Rugby Rumble November 14 found teams from all over the west convene in Reno to do battle on the rugby court. Some of the teams went by new names, two teams merged into one, and an old face was back on the scene. Friday's first game would be one of the true tests of the weekend with the top-seeded 7 A.M. Crowd (Shadow/Casa) meeting Team All Night (Seattle). 7A.M. was loaded with talent including Troy McGuirk and Dean Maccabe, but All Night was talented as well, with Garret Hickling of the Canadian national team and speedy Gary Kanazawa. The first quarter was a real battle with 7 A.M.'s Dan McCauley scoring the final goal to give them a one goal lead, 9-8. 7 A.M. extended their lead to three at the half, 19-16. In the third, All Night fell behind by four more goals 33-26. Team All Night was only able to lessen the deficit by one in the fourth, falling to a group of outstanding players, 42-36. 7 A.M. was led by Maccabe with 15 goals, McCauley with 11, and McGuirk with 10. The California Quake 2, who along with Quake 1 are made up of the former San Jose Sting and Quadzilla teams, soundly defeated Reno, 44-18. Quake 2 was led by Ed Olson with 17. Saturday's games followed form with all the higher seeded teams winning, until the 2 and 3 seeds went to battle. In a well-played, hard-fought game, the Dukes of St. Luke's jumped out to a 15-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. But, Quake 1 wasn't about to fold up the tents. Led by Enrique Madrinan' they cut their deficit to only one at the half. The third quarter saw the Quake take a one goal lead. They were able to go up by two goals and hold off the Dukes for a 39-37 win. The Quake was led by Madrinan with l9.
