UNITED STATES QUAD RUGBY ASSOCIATION

1998-99 Rugby Season is Nearing

Welcome back to Quad Rugby Central fans!

Yes, it has been a long time since something new has appeared on this page.  That's a direct result of several things.  First off, being that the summer months are for the most part, our off-season, there just wasn't  much new information to share.  That's not to say that rugby is dead in the summer, because it's not..  Plenty goes on.....

ani-ball.gif (1865 bytes)Lets see, back in May, the Central Cannibals won the Defi Sportif one's tournament in Montreal, Canada.  The Cannibals were champions of this tournament in 1994, 1995, and 1996, before being dethroned in 1997 by a very tough Tampa Generals team. The Cannibals regained their crown at the 98' Sportif to become four-time champions.   Across the pond in Germany, another one's tournament was held as well.

June played witness to Team USA Rugby winning the Gold Medal at World Championships in Toronto.  12 countries participated in the week long event.  Team USA played great, and kept the USA's perfect record in international competition in tact.  Thanks go out to the players and staff for keeping the USA on top. Great job!

In July, the PVA/USQRA ran a Quad Rugby Clinic in Fayetteville, North Carolina that should spawn a new team.  They had an enthusiastic group attend, and could be very competitive in short order.   The end of July brought 30 players from throughout the country to Las Vegas for the first ever, National Rugby Camp.  Sponsored by PVA and the USQRA, this advanced clinic provided 4 full-days of instruction, training and strategy planning.  Having been a participant, I can tell you first hand that it was both a success, and a blast to attend.  The clinic staff of Terry Vinyard, Brad Mikkelsen, Ed Suhr, and Teresa Skinner all did a wonderful job. Thanks go out to all of them.

August played host to a PVA/USQRA Rugby Clinic in Sacramento, California.  A new club should be joining the league this season as a result.  It's good to see new teams joining the association.  Across the pacific, the Kiwis played host to a international 1's tournament.  Across the atlantic, Sweden held their National Championships, and the Stoke Mandeville games were played in England.

As September closed out the summer, 50 players traveled to Oceanside, California for the 6th Annual Summer Blast.  For many, this is the event that reminds them to begin their serious rugby training again.  October is now upon us, and the rugby calendar is already starting to look pretty busy for the new season.

So you see, even in the "off-season", plenty is going on with rugby.  I'm certain that I didn't name all of the events that took place, but you get the idea. There is always a game to be found somewhere in the world if you want to play.

Oh yea, the other reason that not much changed here is because I needed a break.  This web can suck up tremendous hours of time.  It was great for me to slack off as the webmaster for a bit, but now I'm ready for the new season (I think?).  Send me your dates, schedules, stories, etc., and I'll get them all posted for you (send MS Word doc's by e-mail). Just try and do it early please...

So with that I will say,  "let the hits begin".

       See you on the courts!
