USQRA Heartland North Regional
Milwaukee, Wisconsin - February 10-12, 2006

During a slightly warmer than average February weekend in the upper Midwest, 6 Quad Rugby teams collided in an effort to qualify for the 2006 Heartland Sectional Playoff. The spectators were not disappointed as they were treated to a lot of hard hitting, and highly competitive rugby. We want to thank the Center Court Sports Complex of Waukesha and the good people in the Milwaukee Public School District for the use of their facilities and the dozens of dedicated volunteers who donated their time and talents to this event. The Iron and the Ice also thank the referees and classifiers for their efforts in making this one of the premier regional tournaments in the country.

Because of a last minute change at South Division High School, Friday’s games had to be re-located. Although a few folks got slightly lost, everyone eventually arrived at the right spot. The first set of games saw the Steel Wheelers dominate a game Indianapolis team 53-24 on Court 1, and a solid Chicago team easily defeat the Milwaukee Iron 51-25, on Court 2. With the return of veteran Paul LaVausser the Bears seemed to be stronger than ever. The second matches featured a vastly improved team from Michigan defeating the Minnesota Ice 43-32, who were without their floor leader Dom Clemas and their new high pointer Jesse Honl. On the other court, the potent Chicago Bears handled the Indy Quad Squad in convincing fashion, 44-21. The third set of games had Great Lakes running wild on Pittsburgh 57-37, and a disciplined and experienced Ice team roughed up the Iron, 37-23.

The 2nd day found us at South Division High School. All of the games were hard fought affairs, but there were no upsets. The Storm from Michigan defeated the Hoosiers from Indianapolis by a score of 42-27, and the mighty Bears prevailed over Minnesota, 51-36. In the 2nd set of games Pittsburgh was too much for Milwaukee 58-37, and the Ice rebounded to defeat the Quad Squad, 44-29. The day’s final pairings had Chicago easily topping the Pennsylvania bunch 49-30, and Great Lakes utilizing its great speed to dispatch the Milwaukee Iron 47-22.

Great Lakes Storm, the 2006
Heartland North Champions

On Sunday morning the Milwaukee Iron defeated a feisty Indy Quad Squad 37-30 for 5th place, and the Steelwheelers just got by the Ice by a score of 49-46. The stage was set for a duel between the super quick Great Lakes Storm and the experienced line up and deep bench of the Chicago Bears. The game was a treat for the spectators as there were great plays, great hits, and exciting team play. At one point the Storm was down 7 points but came back to gain a tie at the end of regulation play, and then eek out a victory in overtime 52-50. It was an absolutely thrilling game.

The Milwaukee Iron and Minnesota Ice thank all of the participating teams for coming to Milwaukee. We heard many kudos regarding the food, lodging, transportation, and overall organization of this event, and the credit must go to our volunteers. They are the most dedicated hard working people on the planet. Special thanks go to Dan Lehmann and Tammy Worthington for going “above and beyond” in putting on a quality event. We wish the Great Lakes Storm, Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steel Wheelers, and Minnesota Ice the best of luck in Sectional play.
