SECRETARY GREETING

Welcome to the start of the 1998-1999 rugby season. I hope that everyone enjoyed the summer. I'm lSecretary Kevin Orrooking forward to an exciting and competitive season. I wish everyone luck, and look forward to seeing you on the court. This season will be a challenge to introduce more people to this great sport, and to get more participation from regions nationwide.

Included in this newsletter is the official roster for 1998-99 season with DETAILED instructions, a tentative schedule of tournaments, and a list of the current board and committee members.

The organization needs everyone's help to run smoothly. Please submit your rosters and dues promptly so that we can plan for the upcoming season. Anyone interested in hosting tournaments should contact John Bishop or myself so that we can post the dates. This will help teams to finalize their schedules.

If you know of any active referees, classifiers, or sponsors, please provide me with their current telephone number and address so that we may contact them about the activities of their organization.

1998 "Golden" Team USAWORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

World Championships were held in Toronto, Canada on June 20-28 1998. The United States went 7-0 to win gold, and qualified as the #1 Seed for the 2000 Sydney Paralympics. The US team defeated a tough New Zealand squad in the championship game. Congratulations to the coaches, players, and support staff for your performance in Toronto.

TOURNAMENT HOSTS SOUGHT

The USQRA is actively seeking hosts for the 1998-99 post season tournaments. Regionals, Sectionals, and Nationals are all looking for a few good sites. If your organization has an interest in potentially hosting one of these events, please contact the USQRA's Secretaries office as soon as possible. The phone number is (205) 868-2281.

Last season the association was able to secure major financial support for tournament hosts, and hopes to do so again this year. Requirements of tournament hosts can be reviewed by requesting the "Tournament Bid Package" through the Secretaries office. The document can also be downloaded from the USQRA website at http://www.quadrugby.com/files.htm

CLASSIFICATION CLINIC

The USQRA would like to hold classification clinics at events that include teams who have not yet been classified at Regionals or Sectionals. The Demolition Derby in Birmingham, Alabama is a tentative location for a clinic. Teams that would like to participate in the clinic should contact the  Secretaries office for details. The phone number is (205) 868-2281.

If your team would like to host a classification clinic, a written request must be submitted to the Secretary. A budget must be included if you wish to receive any funding from the USQRA.

See the Classifiers page at http://quadrugby.com/class.htm

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Another busy summer has come and gone. It was quite eventful, starting with World Championships in Toronto, Canada in President Ed SuhrJune. The US National Team successfully defended the world title by defeating New Zealand in the championship game. Congratulations go out to the entire team for a job well done, especially the staff of Reggie Richner, Wendy Gumbert, Angie Seals, Kathy Nelligan, Dave Efferson and Teresa Skinner.

The USQRA has continued to conduct clinics with the help of PVA and Top End by Action. This summer we held the first PVA/USQRA Advanced Rugby Camp in Las Vegas. This four-day event was attended by more than thirty players and was a resounding success. I look forward to an even better camp next year. Basic camps were also held in Fayetteville NC, Sacramento CA and Washington DC. I would like to thank all the clinic instructors for donating their time and expertise.

The organization needs everyone's help to run smoothly. Please submit your rosters and dues promptly so that we can plan for the season. It is not too early to look ahead to Regionals and Sectionals. Anyone who is interested in hosting one of these tournaments should contact Kevin so we can set dates and begin to finalize the schedule.

I would like to remind everyone that we need nominations for the USQRA Hall of Fame. There are some great players and support personnel deserving of recognition. USQRA's two annual awards, The Spirit of Achievement and the Athlete of the Year, also should be nominated by the membership. The appropriate nomination forms can be found on the web page. I encourage everyone to think of individuals worthy of these distinctions.

The coming season looks like it will be competitive and exciting. I wish everyone luck, and look forward to seeing you on the court.
